The Challenges and Benefits of an Innocence Unit at a Public Defenders Office

Location: Lake Nona
Date: Sat, May 2
Time: 3:15 PM - 4:30 PM

Most innocence organizations are based at law schools or non-profit organizations, while relatively few are part of a public defender office. This is surprising since the mission of a public defender office is to represent the indigent criminal defendant, and most exonerees were convicted as indigent defendants. This panel, composed of directors of innocence organizations based at public defender offices will explore the challenges and benefits of this practice, with an aim of encouraging more Innocence Network organizations to work with public defender offices.
