Women and Innocence: Internal and External Factors that Influence False Confessions

Location: Lake Sheen
Date: Fri, May 1
Time: 10:00 AM - 11:15 AM

This session will discuss the findings from research done from a database the presenters created which includes 80 female false confession cases. The dicussion will include general information about the cases and the women, in addition to a proposed false confession typology that reflects the internal and external variables that influenced the resulting confession. The goal of the research is to shed light on factors that increase false confession susceptibility, in addition to factors that appear to be uniquely related to female false confessions. The presenters will discuss the broad implications these findings have for psychologists, legal professionals, those involved in the criminal justice system, public policy advocates, and innocent individuals who have not yet been exonerated.
